How did pizza get so popular in America?

Pizza and pizzerias have been in existence in America, mostly on the east coast, for over 100 years now, however pizza never really took off as a mainstream food until the 50’s. The reason for that is World War II, which exposed tens of thousands of allied troops, notably those who served in the Italian campaign, to pizza. Many looked to immigrant bakers to reproduce the foods they ate in Italy, or they took a stab at it themselves. Whichever way it worked out, an entire industry was born.

And with that I’m going to leave pizza behind for a while and move on to other subjects.
